Rhoda was born in 1813. She is the daughter of John Asbell and Mary Elizabeth Coyle, and the sister of Thomas, Sarah, Mary Paulina, Pierce, John II, Tyre, Lucinda, William, and Hannah. Rhoda grew up in the Kissie Branch area of Red Lick Creek in Estill County, Kentucky. Her father was a farmer, blacksmith, hunter, timberman, and also the surveyor of the county roads. Rhoda's parents both died when she was a teenager. Rhoda remained single.
