Biography

William was born in 1857. He passed away in 1926.

He appears with his wife Dora in the 1880 census for Spring Hill, Hempstead County, Arkansas, and again in the 1900 Spring Hill census.

William moved with his wife to Bowie, Texas, sometime before 1920, where he appears in the census as a farmer.

Research Notes

William (age 3) appears in the 1860 Walton County census in the household of John Anderson Armistead. His relationship to the family is uncertain.

A "William Armistead," age 13, appears in John Armistead's household in the 1870 Gwinnett County census and is believed to be the same person. Is he John's natural son, or the child of another family member? Did John formally adopt him or just represent him as "my son William"? In any event, when William moved to Arkansas, he retained his birth name of Asberry.

The connection with the William Asberry in Arkansas is conjectural, based on his Georgia origins and geographical proximity to the Betts family. (John's youngest daughter Nancy Ann married Reddick Betts and settled in Hempstead County, Arkansas.) I have been unable to determine whether or when William and Dora moved back to Arkansas, where they are buried.
