Biography

Peter Aschoff was the son of Carl and Jacqueline Carberry Aschoff, born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1949.[1]

He married Patricia Edwards.

He died in 2002.[2]

Obituary

Peter Richard Aschoff, 52, of Oxford, Miss., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died of a heart attack Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, in Baptist Memorial Hospital - North MS, Oxford.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia; a son, Edward of Oxford, Miss.; his parents, Carl and Jacqueline of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Jo Ellen Dixon of Cedar Rapids and Gretchen Aschoff of Albuquerque, N.M.; and a brother, Mike of Coralville.

Peter had taught anthropology and African-American studies at the University of Mississippi since 1986. He wrote and lectured extensively on issues in black music and culture, especially the blues. He was a contributing writer for "Living Blues" magazine for 18 years. He also worked with the National Endowment for the Humanities, Center for the Study of Southern Culture, National Endowment for the Arts and National Public Radio. He was a faculty member for the University of Southern Mississippi's Caribbean Studies Program in Jamaica and Cuba. He was recently an academic ambassador of the U.S. State Department to Dakar, Senegal.

Peter was an immensely popular teacher. His passion and animation made him a favorite of the students. He was actively involved in community and civic activities. His life outside of work was devoted to his wife and son.[3]
