On May 3, 1841, Jacob (age 26) was issued a 3rd class of headright, certificate no. 281, for 640 acres of land in Houston County, TX. He indicated that he had emigrated to Houston County in January of 1838 (at age 24). [5]
According to the Texas State Historical Association, "third class" headrights of 640 acres for heads of families and 320 acres for single men went to recipients who immigrated to Texas after October 1, 1837, and before January 1, 1840." [1]
Some family trees suggest that Jacob was married when he arrived in Texas, but his wife died. The fact that he was issued 640 acres as opposed to the 320-acre alllotment for single men supports that theory.
Jacob's headright was a "cc"--conditional certificate, meaning that it was issued on the condition that he remain a resident there for three years. He did, and on August 24, 1846, the certificate was changed to unconditional status. [6]
Jacob (age 31) was listed in Houston Co., TX on the Republic of Texas poll list in 1846. [7]
