James Ashall was born in about 1867 in St Helens, Lancashire. He was the son of James Ashall and Ann (Eccleston) Ashall.
By April 2nd 1871, James' parents were living in Windle, and his father was working as a coal miner. James' half-brother Henry Ashall was living with them, and working as a coal miner too. So was his half-sister Mary Jane Lancaster - Mary Jane was 16, and working as a dressmaker. There were also three children born since James and Ann's marriage: Ellen (7), James junior (4) and Thomas (2).
By April 3rd 1881, they were living in Albert Street, Windle. James' father was unemployed; he may have been in poor health. James Junior, now 15, was working as a hand in the glass works; Thomas was still in school, and Ellen wasn't in paid employment, so was probably helping with the housework. The family had two boarders to bring in a bit of extra income.
James' father died in 1886, aged 58. He was buried on 26 Mar 1886 in St Helens Cemetery, in an unpurchased grave.
