Emil was born in Ripley, Illinois son of William and Josephine Hendricks Ashbaker. He was a good farmer who trained hunting dogs. He owned and operated his own trucking route in Mt. Sterling, Illinois. He met Mildred at a skating rink on Valentine's Day 1926. He could skate backward with skill. He borrowed a roadster from a friend to take Mildred home. He came back the next night and they went on a date to the Bejou Theater and saw Rudolph Valentino in "The Shiek". He had asthma all his life and passed from COPD.
