Census records for 1910 & 1920 census show he grew up in Bloomington, Decatur county, Iowa. The 1930 census shows he was an inmate at Walnut, Polk county, Iowa.

He married Wyona Winifred McDowell on Apr. 28, 1927. They had one daughter, Roberta Jean. Winifred died 1939 as a result of burns she received from a oil burning stove. Wyona's family didn't like Forest and when she was buried the family refused to place her married name on her headstone.
