Born about 1603 John Ashburnham was the eldest son of Sir John Ashburnham of Ashburnham and his wife, Elizabeth Beaumont. [1] [2] He was educated at Gray's Inn and Peterhouse, Cambridge and succeeded his father in 1620 aged about 17.

By license dated 24 September 1629 he married Frances Holland, daughter of William Holland of West Burton, Sussex. They had four sons and 4 daughters before her death about 1651.

His second wife was Elizabeth Kenn, daughter of Christopher Kenn and widow of John 1st Baron Poulett of Hinton St George. There were no children from this marriage.

Groom of the Bedchamber to King Charles I. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Hastings in 1640. In 1646 he was the only person who attended King Charles I when the latter left Oxford. Between 1647 and 1658 he was imprisoned in the Tower by Cromwell. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Sussex after 1660. [3]

John died on 15 Jun 1671.
