-Vernal Express, March 27, 1952, transcribed by Rhonda Holton Hosts of Friends Pay Last Tribute To Leonia A. Hall

MAESER -- The chapel was filled to overflowing Friday afternoon, when relatives and friends came to pay their last tribute to Leonia Ashby Hall, wife of Thomas E. Hall.

Mrs. Hall came to Ashley Valley in 1900 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William M. Ashby. She taught school in Deep Creek and Hayden. For two years Mrs. Ashby was bedridden and Leona acted as her nurse. For many years she was a teacher in the Maeser LDS Sunday School. Many of her former students came some distance to attend her funeral.

The funeral services were under the direction of Bishop Harvey McKee of the Maeser First Ward.

A quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. Owen Hacking, Sarah Glines and Arza Adams, accompanied by Lucille Calder, sang, "Oh My Father," a number especially requested by the family because it was written and composed by Eliza R. Snow in the home of Stephen Markham, who was the grandfather of Mrs. Hall.

Opening prayer was offered by Lester Bingham, following which Evelyn Hacking played an organ solo, "Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling."

A tribute to Mrs. Hall from the Stake Relief Society Board was read by Jennie Weeks. The members of the boared who attended the funeral sat as a group.

First speaker was President Archie Johnson. He was followed by a vocal solo by Lucille Calder, accompanied by Mrs. Hacking, "In The Garden."

President Don B. Colton of the LDS Mission Home was the second speaker. Closing remarks were by Bishop McKee.

The quartet sang "I'll Go Where You Want Me To Go Dear Lord." Benediction was by LeRoy E. Carroll.

Honorary pallbearers were the members of the High Priest quorum. Pallbearers were Phillip Hall, Lynn Hall, Lee Murray, Perry Maxfield, Keith Ashby and Dale Ashby.

Burial was in the Maeser Fairview Cemetery under the direction of the Deseret Mortuary of Salt Lake City, with Mr. Wilson and Mr. Merrell in attendance.

-Vernal Express, April 3, 1952, transcribed by Rhonda Holton Leonia Ashby Hall

Leonia was born at Lake Shore, Utah on September 2, 1889 to Sarah Elizabeth Markham and William Ashby Sr. In 1900 she moved with her family to Vernal, Utah.

They built a brick house in Maeser. After completing her education, she became a school teacher. She taught in Hayden and Deep Creek. It was said she was a good teacher and even the boys showed her respect.

When her mother got ill she took care of her. Her mother died January 1, 1913. That same year she began dating Thomas Edwin Hall. He writes, "Our courtship was very enjoyable." They were married in the Salt Lake Temple October 2, 1913, making the trip by horse and buggy. To this family came six boys and four girls. Her husband wrote about Leonia:

She had many trials to meet and she was not in the best of health. Her father passed away in January 1920. Her home burned down in Sepember 1934. Garth, her third son, died July 14, 1941 from falling with a horse two weeks before. Don, her second son, was killed in March 1947 when a trench caved in on him. It was my mother's desire to do all that she could for others.

Her husband said about Leonia: "The qualities I saw in Leonia in caring for her invalid mother were again demonstrated in the care she gave our children. . . I cannot mention my doings without her for she truly did her part. I can only hope to attain a reward equal to hers throughout the eternities together." On March 23, 1952 she died of a cerebral hemorrhage. Burial: Maeser Fairview Cemetery Vernal Uintah County Utah, USA
