Biography

Lt. James Ashby served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: 1861
Mustered out: 1864 (DMS)
Side: CSA
Regiment(s): 38th Virginia Infantry;57th Virginia Infantry

James W. Ashby was born about 1840 in Patrick County, Virginia. His death record for September 8, 1864 in Winchester, Virginia notes parents as James E. and Mary Ashby.

In 1850, James was living with his parents in Patrick County. By 1860, he had moved to Whitmell, in southern Pittsylvania County.

James married Sarah M. Jones on January 15, 1861 in Henry County. The couple had one daughter, Lucy Jones Ashby about 1864.

James enlisted in Company I of the 57th Virginia Infantry in 1861. He began a Sergeant, but rose to Lieutenant. Unfortunately he died in Winchester on September 8, 1864.

Sarah remarried to Hiram Earles, who fought with the 38th Virginia Infantry to begin the war, but was transferred to the 57th in 1862, so he may have known James Ashby.
