In the 1871 census Maria (age 40) was the wife of John Slater in Skidby, Yorkshire, England.[2].

Maria was born in Hutton Cranswick, Yorkshire, England, and baptised there in 1829. She was the daughter of Thomas Ashby and Esther.[3] The family lived in Cranswick in 1841.[4]
At the time of the 1851 census, Maria worked as a domestic servant for the Holtby family in Nafferton, Yorkshire.[5]
In 1852 Maria married John Slater (who was visiting the Holtbys in 1851) in Beverley, Yorkshire.[6][7] In 1871 John worked as a farm bailiff and the family lived in Skidby, Yorkshire.[8]
Maria died in 1877 at Hull Bridge in the parish of Tickton, Yorkshire, and was buried in Hutton Cranswick. She was 47.[9]
