Biography

John W Ashby was born about 1833 in Virginia, United States. He was the son of Nathan Ashby and Elizabeth Ashby.[1] (1833 per 1850, 1860, 1880 and 1910 census, and gravestone;[1][2][3] 1832 per 1870 census; Sep 1832 per 1900 census.)

In 1850, John W Ashby (18) was living in Preston, Virginia, with parents Nathan Ashby (46) and Elizabeth Ashby (30), and siblings Nathan W (19), Ellenor J (16), Samuel F (14), William H 912), Elizabeth A (10), Thomas W (8), Unis A (2) and Johnathan F (1).[1]

His family moved to Missouri around 1850-1853. In the 1860 US census, his parents and younger siblings were living in Center Township, Knox, Missouri. John was not living with them.

In the 1860 US census, John W Ashby (age 27) was living in Center, Knox, Missouri, with wife Ellen (24), and children Armilda and Rebecca.[2]

In 1870, John W Ashby (38, born Virginia) was living in Lyon Knox, Missouri, with wife Ellen Ashby (33) and children Arminta J (13), Rebecca J (10), Elizabeth A (8), Sarah (3), Mary (3) and John Albert (6 months), and with James Rollins (12). He was a farmer.[4]

In 1880, John Ashby (47) and Ellen Ashby (44) were living in Lyon, Missouri, with children Rebeca J (20), Mary (13), Sarah (13), John A (10) and Charles E (7).[5]

John Ashby, born 1833, died 23 Feb 1917 in Cottage Grove, Lane County, Oregon, United States.[6] He was buried at Fir Grove Cemetery, Cottage Grove, Lane County, Oregon.[3]

J. W. Ashby Dead. (Register Lane County Special) -- COTTAGE GROVE, Oregon, March 1. John Washington Ashby died Friday morning (week prior; Feb 23) at the home of his son, John, on Silk creek. The funeral was held Sunday, Rev. King officiating. Mr. Ashby was 84 years of age and was a native of Virginia.[7]

Research Notes

Another John Ashby married Mary E Ballen on 19 Mar 1863 in Livingston, Missouri.[8] In the 1870 and 1880 census, they were living in Livingston, Missouri, and appeared to have no children.[9]

Son's 1945 Obituary: John A. Ashby -- COTTAGE GROVE -- John A Ashby of Lorane route died Monday in Eugene at the age of 75 years. He was born Feb. 6, 1870, at Hurdland. Mo., and came to Oregon in 18B8. He married Minnie L. Miller on Nov. 20. 1896. In addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Leslie Godard of Vida and Mrs. Clair Parks of Eugene; a foster son, Otto Nattheyer of Cottage Grove; three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a. m. Thursday at Mills mortuary in Cottage Grove.[10]
