Alfred was born on 31 July 1901 in Stratford, Essex, the son of Ernest Ashby and Phoebe Green[1]. He was admitted to Tangley National School, Tangley, Hampshire on 21 June 1906, where he was educated until 12 July 1915[2]. He appeared with his parents on the 1911 Census at Fir Tree Cottage, Tangley[3]. He joined the Royal Air Force on 2 September 1919[4]. He appeared on the 1921 Census in Shrewsbury[5]. He died on 13 July 1921 in Uffington, Shropshire, when he sadly drowned in the River Severn[6]. He was buried in Tangley Churchyard[7].
