Biography
Mary (Ashdown) Shepherd was born in Hever, Kent, England.
Mary Ashdown was born around 1824 in Hever, Kent, England, United Kingdom. Mary married James Sheppard in 1844 aged 20 years.[1]. James was widowed, aged 43 years and Mary's father's name was William. They had three sons, James, William and Frederick (who died at age 4). William emigrated to NZ and James, his brother, joined him in his latter years. Mary was buried on 17 March 1871 in Sevenoaks, Kent.[2]
Research Notes
The Ashdowns have been extremely difficult to research as there were two families of Ashdown with their children having similar names and the Heads are both William. Also, the daughter of one William named Eleanore, born 1818, married the John of the other William. One family was based in Chiddingstone and the other in Hever/Brasted so a lot of the sleuthing was based on location only. One of the Williams married Mary Knight in Chiddingstone on 30 Oct 1788 and the other married Susannah Smith on 10 Apr 1814.
