James, born in October 1846,[1] was the son of William Ash and Anna Marks. In 1851 he lived on a farm in West Nissouri, Middlesex County, Canada West (Ontario) with his mother, stepfather John Atwell, and siblings.[2]
He emigrated to the United States in 1871 and in 1880 lived with his wife Mary and their four children in Tuscola Township, Michigan, where he was a farmer.[3]
