First Marriage

Willis Ashford married first, unknown wife sometime about 1800, perhaps in Caswell County, North Carolina.[1]

Second Marriage

Willis Ashford married second, Nancy Massey on 9 May 1812 in Caswell County, North Carolina.[2][3]

State of North Carolina, Caswell County.}

Know all Men by these Presents That we Willis Ashford & William Massey are held and firmly bound unto William Hawkins Governor, or his Successors in Office, in the full sum of Five Hundred Pounds, current Money, to be paid to the said Governour, his Successors or Assigns, for the which payment well and truly to be made and done, we bind ourselves, our Heirs, Executors, and Administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents, sealed with our Seals, and dated this Ninth day of May Anno Domini 1812

The condition of the above Obligation is such, That whereas the above bounden Willis Ashford hath made application for a License for a Marriage to be celebrated between him and Nanecy Massey of County aforesaid: Now, in case it shall not appear hereafter that there is any lawful Cause or Impediment to obstruct tha said Marriage, then the above Obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.

In 1810, Willes Ashford was enumerated as the head of household and lived in Caswell County, North Carolina. Also in his household were six persons with the age/sex distribution and inferred attributions as follows:[1]

  • two males, age under 10
  • one male, age 26 thru 44: (himself, Willis Ashford, age 26)
  • one female, under age 10
  • one female, age 26 thru 44 (his first wife)
  • one female, age 45 and over (perhaps, either his mother-in-law or his mother, Mrs. Sarah Pyle)

In 1830, Welly Ashford was enumerated as the head of household and lived in Giles County, Tennessee. Also in his household were eight persons with the age/sex distribution and inferred attributions as follows:[5]

  • three males, age 10 thru 14
  • one male, age 15 thru 19
  • one male, age 40 thru 49: (himself, Willis Ashford, age 46)
  • one female, age 5
  • one female, age 5 thru 9
  • one female, age 30 thru 39 (his second wife, Nancy Massey, age 34)

In 1840, Willis Ashford was enumerated as the head of household and lived in Giles County, Tennessee. Also in his household were seven persons with the age/sex distribution and inferred attributions as follows:[6]

  • two males, age 20 thru 29
  • one male, age 50 thru 59 (himself, Willis Ashford, age 56)
  • one female, age 5 thru 9: (his daughter, Lucy Ashford, age 6)
  • one female, age 10 thru 14
  • one female, age 15 thru 19
  • one female, age 30 thru 39 (his second wife, Nancy Massey, age 44?)

Three persons in his household were employed in agriculture.

In 1850, on September 9th, Wilie Ashford, age 66, farmer, born in North Carolina, was enumerated as the head of the household and lived in District #3, Giles County, Tennessee. Also in the household were Nancy Ashford, age 54, born in Virginia, and Lucy Ashford, age 16, born in Tennessee.
