Obituary: "Dayton - Funeral services were held for George Washington Ashley at the 1st Baptist Church Monday, April 4,(1955), at 4 PM with the pastor, Rev. G. Howard Linton, officiating. Mr. Ashley, 94, had been a resident in Dayton since 1917 & had made him home here with a son, R.F. Ashley, for a number of years. He died Sunday, April 3, in a Cleveland Rest Home. Survivors were 4 sons, R.F. & H.L. of Dayton, W.W. of Houston, & O.R. Ashley of Baytown; one daughter. Mrs. Myrtle Curtis of Hempstead; one brother, Berry Ashley of Baytown; 2 sisters, Mrs. Rose Hollingshead, Baytown & Mrs. Nimm Ashley of Ganado; 20 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 6 g g grand children. Burial was in Linney Cemetery with Pace-Stancil in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were grandsons, G.W., Gene, Jack & O.R. Ashley; Wallace Curtis & Bobby Martin."(Note: source of obituary not recorded.)


George Washington ASHLEY, born July 17, 1860, Robeson Co, NC, was the second of seven children born to James Robert ASHLEY and his 2nd wife, Minerva BARFIELD. When George was about ten years old when his family moved to Texas. On 18 Jan 1883, George married Mary Elizabeth BROCK. He was 22 and she was about 28-30 years old. They had five children. George lived to be 94 years old in Dayton, Liberty Co, TX.
