Mustered in as Private & was promoted to Corporal on Dec 1, 1862. Reduced to ranks on May 2, 1863. Present or accounted for until captured at Gettysburg, PA, Jul 1-3, 1863. Confined at Ft. Delaware, DE, until transferred to Point Lookout, MD, Oct 15-18, 1863. Paroled at Point Lookout & transferred to Varina, VA, were he was received Sep 22, 1864, for exchange. Died Oct 22, 1864, of disease. Place of death not reported."

↑ Source: #S1804 Page: "The Observer" of Fayetteville, NC Data: Text: "Died suddenly 21st of Oct 1864 near Leesville, Robeson Co, John Powell Ashley, only son of William Henry Ashley, decd., age 19 years, 8 months & 4 days. He leaves a kind mother,& 2 affectionate sisters to mourn their loss. He was a brave & noble soldier, and affectionate son & brother, a kind friend & beloved by all who knew him. He was one of the 1st to bid farwell to home & love ones in defense of his country. He was a member of Co C, 20th Regt, NCT. He fought bravely, with his regiment through the campaign for VA until he was wounded & taken prisoner at Gettysburg. He remained in a Yankee prison 15 months. Was at home but two show weeks when God called his spirit to a Better Land. Although he did not die on the battlefield, a nobel soldier has given his life for his country. Brave soldier boy, peace be with thy slumber. Cease, loved one, cease they mouning. Your loss is his eternal gain."

Hospitalized in Danville, Virginia, May 18, 1864; Transferred to hospital at Wilmington on an unspecified date. Returned to duty on August 6, 1864. Present or account for until December 28, 1864, when he was reported absent without leave. c
