Chester C. Ashley, son of Lucius Allen Ashley and Mary (Cuthbert) Ashley, was born on December 22, 1901.[1] His parents were probably residents of Fruitvale, California at the time, so it is likely that he was born there.
Chester married Edith Taylor sometime before the 1930 US Census. Based on the fact that their first child was born in September 1928,[2] they were probably married about 1927 or early 1928. Edith's last name is set forth on the birth records for her children.[3][4][5]
Chester and Edith had the following children:
Allen Cedric, b. September 4, 1928 in San Francisco, California,[3][2][6][7] d. February 7, 1972 in Santa Clara, California[2]
Joan Edith, b. December 25, 1929 in San Francisco, California,[4][6][7] m. June 26, 1949 Bernard Schweickert in San Mateo, California[8]
Lyman Chester, b. January 11, 1938 in San Francisco, California,[5][7] m. September 5, 1959 Mary J. McCarthy in San Mateo, California[9]
The 1930 US Census for Berkeley, California shows a household headed by Chester Ashley and containing Chester (20), his wife Edith (29), son Allen C (1 & 6/12), and daughter Joan E (3/12). Chester's occupation is listed as "mechanical engineer" for the petroleum industry.[6]
