Biography

DISPUTED PROFILE: May not be the wife of James Forrest/Forrester

Ann Ashley, born 2 Jan 1701 in St. Paul's Parish, Kent County, Maryland of Parents Isaac Isaac Ashley / Ashly and Elizabeth Unknown ASHLEY[1]

Ann (Ashley) may have married James "Forrest" aka Forrester

Ann and James had the following children:

  1. William "Forrest" aka Forrester (1726–1777) 1726 • Orange County, North Carolina
  2. James "Forrest" aka Forrester jr (1730–1791) 1730 • Orange County, North Carolina
  3. Benjamin "Forrest" aka Forrester (1736–1800) 1736 • Virginia
  4. Thomas Forrester (1737–1777) 1737 • Surry County, North Carolina

WARNING: Disputed Profile

The maiden name of Ann and the genealogy of Ann, wife of James Forrester is in question.

Note: The issue regarding Ann Ashley b. 1701 is that it seems suspicious that a woman born in Maryland would marry someone from North Carolina.

The Ashley lines of Boston, Massachusetts, Kent, Maryland and Lancaster, Virginia were connected and may be related. Since Ann was orphaned at age 8, we don't know with whom or where she was brought up. It also seems unlikely that a Forrester descendant living in North Carolina would invent a maiden name like Ashley unless there was some family source at one time. If her name was invented, it could just as well have been some other name.

Thomas Ashley who came to Bertie County, North Carolina about 1720 is believed to be from the Boston line. He may have been a relative of Ann?

No documented sources have been found to prove conclusively that Ann Ashley b. 1701 was the wife of James Forrester Sr. (abt.1700-bef.1755). Researchers are advised to use caution.

Note: According to the genealogical blog written by Mary Etta Hazelwood, Ann was orphaned at age 8 and came to North Carolina to live with her uncle Thomas Ashley who had moved to North Carolina in 1720. It is believed that Ann Ashley met and married James Forrester on 10 June 1725 in North Carolina. She is referred to in the will of James Forrester of 1755 as just Ann.[2]

Ann Ashley is the correct name for the wife of James Forrester according to the genealogy blog of Mary Etta Hazelwood at Word Press.com. [2]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Ann by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Ann:

Bio doesn't list daughter " Lucy Forrester Manning ", though she already has a profile started. Total number of children is five - four boys and one daughter.

Ashley-2434 and Ashley-2478 appear to represent the same person because: Come on girls, these two profiles represent the same person. What is holding up the merge? Thanks, Mary

I have added Research Notes to both Ann Ashley and James Forrester profiles, including Wikitree IDs to go back to the other profiles. I will unlink James from the spouse profiles, as well as the children, after I have added Research Notes to the children profiles also, since we haven't found 'reliable' sourcing.

Ashley-2434 and Ashley-2478 appear to represent the same person because: This is now a duplicate profile. Dates have been updated per Mary Etta Hazelwood's genealogy. Thank you, Mary

Ashley-2478 and Unknown-366800 are not ready to be merged because: * Four variations of "Forrester" surname given within the text of James Forrester Sr.'s last will and testament.
  • All children and descendants excluding eldest son "William " used " Forrester " surname spelt with variations.
  • Family Search link includes "William " as a son of James Sr. that has now been removed from James Sr.'s profile.
  • Family Search link now lists sdditional children added that are not named in last will and testament of James Forrester Sr.
  • Ann Ashley Forrester data was completed by someone other than myself.
  • Marriage data "dispute " was done by someone other than myself and I previously offered to remove and no reply was given.
  • Findagrave link originally listed James Forrester Sr. as " Forrester " and was changed only within the past 18 months via Ed Forester who is greatly enamored of N.B. Forrest (well after I started his profile).
  • James Forrester Jr. 's last will and testament also includes variations of " Forrester " spellings as did his father's.
  • Too much conflicting data at this time with more research indicated.
  • Logically it is questionable as to " why " children of a " Forrest " would utilize Forrester spelling variations if parents surname was " Forrest ".
  • Paternal lineage established via DNA results show an identical match with no variance to a Y-test match to a male "Forrester " in Scotland.
  • Ant and all descendants of James Forrester Sr. will research their "Forrester " surname, not " Forrest ".
  • Secondary to all reasons listed merge should be postponed until further research is completed.

The early court records and tax lists are just as confusing about the spelling of Forrest vs Forrester. We have the same thing with Gresham changing to Grisham, Gressum and Grissom as the Greshams migrated south. We agreed that any Gresham born in Virginia would stay Gresham aka Grisham, etc. and any born in other states would use the adapted name Grisham aka Gresham. It works well. I am very active with my father John T. Gresham in the Gresham Surname project at FTDNA and know that even Ydna does have variances over time but it is a tool. My father's Ydna is almost the same as Gresham men still living in Norfolk, England which was the ancestral home of Sir John Gresham who built Gresham's School but it does have variances. This all has nothing to do with Ann the wife of James. She is a totally different issue. Those two profiles represent the same person. It is understood that if we know that then the profiles should be merged. If Ann, wife of James does have a documented marriage record then her last name and other data can be added, but we don't need duplicate wives Ann. The Disputed comment has to be added when there is this much disagreement about a profile connection. Again, you seem to take things personally. Maybe we can get a Southern Project Assignment to review this entire file and help us out with these issues. I will talks to someone about that. Mary

Ashley-2478 and Unknown-366800 appear to represent the same person because: These two profiles were intended to represent the wife named Ann in the will of James Forrest. Merging them clears up the confusion in the registers and consolidates research notes into one profile. Please merge. Thank you, Mary

There is too much doubt about James Forrest ever marrying an Ann Ashley from Maryland. I suggest changing her last name to unknown to be genealogically correct and disconnecting her from Isaac and Elizabeth until some marriage record surfaces. Thanks, Mary

In which case, this profile's Ann's place of birth should not be Maryland as well.

Chase,

Read the blog with sources cited if you would. Then, please reconnect as it was previously. Mary Etta Hazelwood's blog with sources cited validate that Ann Ashley married James Forrester Sr. and even related her life story. So, please check it out and add her back if you would would be so kind. Also, Jame's Forrester (aka Forrest) had his Findagrave link changed from " Forrester to Forrest " and that should be corrected. The "Forester " man over his link on Findagrave has been non - responsive to my request . He changed it to " Forrest " from "Forrester " as it was when I first started this profile. Perhaps you can get his cooperation whereas, I cannot. Fellow WikiTree genealogists had Ann's family and profiles entered prior to it being disconnected. If you read her life story in that blog , it will explain how she got from Maryland to NC to marry James Sr. & she is most definitely my ancestor. Outstanding work by Mary Etta Hazelwood. I thank you in advance.

Patty - The blog provides a nice "story" but provides no evidence or sources that support its assertion that Jame Forrester's wife was named Ann Ashley from Maryland. The blog states that Isaac Ashley of Maryland had a brother named Thomas who moved to North Carolina. However, as discussed at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ashley-3426#Children, no reliable evidence has been found to support that claim either.

Unknown-366800 and Ashley-2478 do not represent the same person because: different name, different birth date

Elizabeth, the last will and testament of James Forrester Sr. included 4 variations of the spelling of " Forrester " . I did not fill out Ann's information or dispute the marriage. I can say with certainty that my Y-test donor and a "Forrest " cousin that I collaborated with had identical results with no variance. I do believe that this is indeed the same person even with the small difference in birth dates. Findagrave has changed James St.'s last name to " Forrest " although his descendants maintain the surname " Forrester ". James Jr.'s last will and testament was written with the same variations in the spelling of the surname. I thought you might find that info pertinent. What to do next ?

Hi Billy Matney...I approved "merge" and now have "Ann Ashley Forrester" as a "half sister to self" & married to "Thomas Forrester" which is incorrect. You have the correct date, but I did not enter any info about siblings, etc. Could you please clean-up & correct ? Your sources cited are great & I'd love keeping them on profile. It is my understanding that James Sr.'s full name was either "James William" or "William James Sr." The multiple spellings of "Forrester" are confusing, I agree ! Thank you for your assist on this in advance....Patty Forrester Atkinson
