This is the profile for Joseph Ashley who received a grant of land on Bennett's Creek, North Carolina in 1716.
Origin; Parentage
The origin and parentage of the profile's Joseph Ashley are unknown.
Date and Place of Birth
Based on the fact that he received a grant of land in 1716, he was almost certainly 21 at that time and thus born no later than 1695 and possibly well before that date. His place of birth is unknown.
Possible Brother of William Ashley Sr of Chowan?
A 1719 record refers to William Ashley and Joseph Ashley as witnesses in a case of mismarking of hogs, based on (i) the fact that Joseph and Willam Ashley Sr of Chowan both seemed to have land in the upper Chowan area and (ii) the fact that William Ashley Sr of Chowan is the only known William Ashley who was approximately Joseph's age, this record suggests that Joseph and William Ashley Sr of Chowan may have been brothers.
Marriage; Children
It is reasonably plausible that Joseph married Sarah Barrow. As discussed in her profile, it is well established that she married a man named Ashley and there are no candidates for her husband have been identified. Sarah's children are discussed in her profile.
Death
Joseph's date of death is unknown. The last record definitely known to relate to him is the 1719 record relating to the hog mismarking case. If he was the husband of Sarah (Barrow) Ashley, then he probably died sometime after 1729 when Sarah's youngest known child was probably conceived and before 1745 when she is referred to in a deed as a widow and when she married, second, Edward Maudlin.
