Biography

Merinda was born on 1 June 1864 in Erin, Wellington County, Canada West, to Joshua Ashley and Agnes Workman. ^[1]

In 1871, Merinda was the oldest in her family, 7, and the only one going to school. She had a younger sister Henrietta, 5, and younger brothers Caldwell, 3, and David, 6 months.^[2]

In 1873 her younger sister, Margaret, was born. At that time their father Joshua was working as a veterinary surgeon. ^[3]

On the 26th of August 1885 in Preston, Ontario, Canada, Luther Overland, 33 year old harness maker, son of Charles and Mary (née Matthews) Overland, married Merinda Ashley, 21, daughter of Joshua and Agnes (née Workman) Ashley. Witnesses to the wedding were Philip Drück and Joseph Huller, both of Preston. ^[4]

Merinda passed away on 16 Feb 1939 in Claremont, Pickering township, Ontario from coronary thrombosis (heart failure). She was staying with family (Caldwell and family) for the final two months of her life, away from her home in Erin township. She is buried in Erin Cemetery, in Wellington County, Ontario.^[5][6]
