Walter Jennings Ashley was born in St. Clair (in Fayette County), West Virginia on March 31, 1901 to Rueben and Ada Munyan Ashley. He was the third of four children born to the couple (one of whom died in infancy).
Walter was raised in Falls, West Virginia. Some time between 1910 and 1917, the family moved to Belle, West Virginia. In his late teens, Walter took a job working in the coal mines alongside his father.
On April 2, 1925 Walter married Mildred Hemming in Cedar Grove, West Virginia. The couple settled in their home they purchased in Malden, West Virginia. They had three children. He worked as a supervisor in the gas house at the local chemical plant.
Walter died on February 10, 1974 in Kanawha County, West Virginia. He was 72 years old. He is buried alongside his wife in Montgomery Memorial Park in London, West Virginia.
