Robert Ashman was an early settler of Hempstead, southwestern Nassau County, on Dutch-ruled western Long Island, as the town was founded by English colonists after purchase from natives in 1643, and then under a patent from New Netherland.
The first records of Robert were in 1657, when the town of Hempstead recorded lists of who owned livestock pastured at "the necke" and how many in order to tax them as ratables; he owned the most livestock of anyone at that point.
On 30 April 1657, "robord Ashman" was paid "fower gattes belonging to the towne in the est oxpaster hee to mayntayn the finse for one yeer and to paye to the towne five shillings." [3]
Robert appears frequently in the Hempstead records, elected a townsmen in 1660, and confirmed as a magistrate by the governor in 1662 and 1663. He was one of those who set up the town's militia in 1663.[4]
In 1663, "the whole point of upland at Rockaway, commonly called by the name Northwest point" was granted to Robert Ashman, Thomas Hickes, John Ellison, Thomas Ellison, Hope Wasburne, and Abraham Smith.[5]
Children (order unknown)[6]
Robert Ashman is called the brother-in-law of Thomas Jeycocks in a 4 Dec 1663 land sale by Jeycocks to Caleb Carman.[7] Is that Thomas Jacocks (abt.1619-bef.1677)? That profile quotes someone saying that Thomas married Richard Ashman's daughter Ruth.
So by which relationship were they brothers-in-law? Once, twice?
At 10 April 1689 Wait Smith, and Nathaniel Denton as son-in-law was one of the administrators of the along with the widow Katrina of the unrecorded will of Robert Ashman of Jamaica, NY. At 3 June 1683 the will was presented in court. Inventory showed personal estate of 50 pounds. Abstracts of Early Wills of Queens County, New York, Recorded in Libers A and C of Deeds. [8]
Here’s a 1678 land patent issued in Upland Pennsylvania for Robert and John Ashman among others. Is that this Robert? We know Robert’s daughter Lydia moved to the area and married a Swede so seems probable. “Pasiunk Patent” in Early Pennsylvania Land Records, pages 137-138
