Biography

James Scott Ashman enlisted as a Private in Capt. McCoy's Co., which subsequently became Co. I, 4 Regiment, Indiana Infantry at age 20 on June 5, 1847 at Frankfort, Indiana for a period stated as During the war. He was mustered in at Old Fort Clark, Jeffersonville, Indiana, on June 15, 1847, by Captain R. C. Gatlin.

Ashman served with this company until he was mustered out at Madison, Indiana on July 16, 1848, by Major H. A. Goff. James Scott Ashman was the son of George Ashman and Jane Scott. He was born in Huntington County, Pennsylvania on 30 May 1828. The family immigrated to Clinton County, around 1840. After his discharge Ashman headed to California one of many to follow the gold rush.

He was a miner, store clerk, store owner and Sheriff of Fresno County for some 17 years. He was married twice in California. James Scott Ashman died in Fresno, California on 31 Jan. 1879.

The History of Fresno County lists his date of death as Dec 31, 1878.

The Fresno Republican (January 4, 1879) obituary says he died December 31, 1878 and was buried January 1, 1879.

He was originally buried at the I.O.O.F. cemetery in Millerton. His remains were reported to have later been moved to Fresno.

The I.O.O.F. cemetery of Millerton is now at the bottom of Millerton Lake.

Unknown Millrton burials were moved to Winchell's Cove Cemetery. Identified remains were re-interred as requested by surviving relatives.

Some were cremated and taken to Fresno Columbarium
