A correspondent writes :—Mrs Elizabeth Ann Webb, an old resident of Granya, died last week at the hoary age of 88 years. When 15 years of age, she was brought to Australia by her mother, Mrs. Ashmore. They sailed from Liverpool in the good ship Hotspur, and they landed at Melbourne 78 years ago. Soon after landing they proceeded to Benalla, where deceased was employed by her uncle, a hotel-keeper named Banfield. Three years later she married the late William Carter Webb, who had taken-up land at Gooramadda, where Mr. Webb followed the calling of a vigneron for a few years. The lure of gold induced them to leave for Bethanga. Then the auriferous reputation of Cotton-tree Creek attracted the attention of miners, and, among others who left Bethanga for Granya, were Mr. and Mrs. Webb, This was over 50 years ago, and Mrs. Webb had resided there ever since. Her husband died about 19 years ago. The late Mrs.Webb leaves a large number of descendants. There were ll children— William (deceased), Elizabeth Ann (deceased), Walter Thomas' (Melbourne), Mrs. Bench (Melbourne), Mrs. Grant (Burrowye), John Sutherland (Granya), Mrs. Hole (Bungil), Mrs. Barlow (deceased), Mrs. O'Brien (West Australia), Thomas William (Eldorado), and Percy James (deceased). There are 57 grand children, and great-grand-children number 79. The late Mrs, Webb had not enjoyed good health for the last 35years. The remains were interred In Granya cemetery, on Thursday.
