I have conflicting parents for Alice Ashton, the names I have being Peter Ashton and Mary Rigby. I have a few baptism records linking Alice and Peter and marriage records to link Mary and Peter. Though as I am a beginner I am not sure how to judge the validity of my records entirely. I also struggle to read what records I can access. I would be interested to hear if you are confident of these parents or if the names I have found may be her true parents.
Look forward to your response,
Alice
Hi Alice, thanks for your query. I think it shows the importance of including sources when posting on here! I can’t now recall where I got the information from; as Alice A is the end of a chain, your research may be better than mine. I suspect I may have got info from Ancestry.co.uk which I joined for a while.
I find biographies before census records are tricky, and I suspect speculative. The rule I try to apply is to have two records corroborating each other. More tentative is family origins in close geographical proximity.
Alice is probably my wife’s 5x grandmother; many of her ancestors were from the Prescot area of Huyton, near Liverpool. To find out more details I think we’d need to look at such things as tithe records.
Let me know if I can be of more help, and good luck with your searches.
I'm currently trying to get better at sourcing, so will be a good exercise for me! I will see what I can gather, I do mainly use ancestry.com but also like to cross that over with other research. Thank you, I will let you know if I find something concrete.
Ah interesting, I think Alice is my 7th great grandmother, which would make me something like your wife's great niece. I am based in the Liverpool area so we're still going strong! Good luck to you as well!
