Biography

James Ashton was born in about 1824 in Stalybridge, Cheshire, England. His father was William Ashton.

James Ashton married Lydia Pontefract in 1845. The marriage was registered in Stockport, Cheshire in the last quarter of the year.[1][2]

James and Lydia had five children:

  1. Mary Ann Ashton (1847-)
  2. Lucy Ashton (1850-)
  3. William Ashton (1852-)
  4. Sarah Jane (Ashton) Woolley (1856-)

In 1851 James Ashton (age 26, Cotton Spinner) lived at Oxford Street in Stayley, Cheshire with his wife Lydia (30) and two daughters: Mary Ann (3) and Lucy (1).[3]

James' wife Lydia Ashton passed away in 1859 - her death was registered in the same quarter as their youngest daughter's birth, so she may have died due to complications of childbirth.

In 1861 James Ashton (age 36, Beer Seller) lived at Warrington Street in Stayley with his four children: Mary A (13, Cotton Weaver), Lucy (11, Scholar), William (9, Scholar), and Sarah I[J] (5, Scholar), as well as his sister-in-law Ann Smith [nee Pontefract] (47, House Keeper) and boarder [nephew] Robert Smith (15, Twister In of Cotton Warper).[4][5] James' daughter Alice Ann (1) was staying with her mother's relatives.

James Ashton (Widower, son of William Ashton) and Jane Davies (Spinster, daughter of John Davies) were married on 25 Dec 1864 at St Peter's in Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire.[6] The marriage was registered in Ashton Under Lyne in the last quarter of the year.[7]

In 1871 James (age 46) lived in Ashton Under Lyne with his wife Jane (48), son Willam (18), and daughter Sarah I[J] (15).[8]

In 1881 James Ashton (age 56, Carter) lived at Whitelands Rd in Ashton Under Lyne with his wife Jane (58) and granddaughter Emily Ashton (8, Scholar).[9]

In 1891 James Ashton (age 67, Sheel Seavenger [Steel Scavenger?]) lived at Whitelands Road in Ashton Under Lyne with his wife Jane (69) and three grandchildren: Emily Ashton (18, Cardroom Hand Cotton Mill), James W Ashton (16, Cotton Gecer), and Edith Woolley (10, Scholar).[10]

James Ashton passed away in 1892, aged 68 years. His death was registered in Ashton Under Lyne in the last quarter of the year.[11] He was buried at St Paul's in Staleybridge on 15 Dec 1892.[12]
