Biography

Martha (Ashworth) Morley was born in Yorkshire, England.

Birth and Parentage

Research is still ongoing into the parentage of Martha Ashworth. It is thought that she was born to James Ashworth and his wife Mary née Haworth/Howorth in Newchurch in Rossendale, St Nicholas, Lancashire, England in 1753.

Marriage and Family

Rossendale, Lancashire is only about 18.5 miles from the parish of Halifax, St John the Baptist, Yorkshire, where, on 17 April 1781, she married Jonathan Morley, cotton spinner and wool manufacturer,^[1]

They had the following children:

• Hannah - bap. 10 Apr 1785 ^[2]
• Abraham, bap. 13 Nov 1788, ^[3]bur. 14 Apr 1802. ^[4]
• Moses - bap. 1 Jan 1792. ^[5][6][7]They were living in Cour (sic) (probably) Crow Hill at this point.^[8]
• Frances (Fanny) - b. 1794 ^[9][10] In Fanny's birth record, Jonathan is recorded as being a comber. ^[11]
• Samuel - bapt. 6 Dec 1801. ^[12][13][7]
• Ann - b. 1782 ^[14]

Notes

• This may have been a relative.^[15]St John's Parish was later amalgamated into the parish district church of St. James, which is why the FamilySearch record notes her burial as taking place at Halifax St James.^[16]
