Edgar Rhodes Ashworth (1868-1911?) was born in Rochdale in late 1868. [1] He was the son of Betsy Ashworth, a cotton weaver. [1]
His mother went on to marry George Rhodes the following year in 1869 so it is possible, even likely, that George was Edgar's father
In the 1871 census, Edgar, recorded as Ashworth, was not living with George & Betsy, but with his grandmother Mary Ashworth at Holmes Street, Rochdale [2] and he was still there in the 1881 census employed as a cotton scavenger. He was recorded as Rhodes, but as his grandmother was possibly ill (she died later that year), his mother and half-siblings were also listed at the address. George Rhodes was not listed with them (although his mother was shown as married.) [3]
In the 1891 census, his mother was shown widowed, and Edgar was living with her and his half-siblings on Crawford Street recorded as Rhodes. He was a cotton mule spinner. [4]
I cannot locate Betsy or the other children in the 1901 census but Edgar, now Ashworth again, was living on Bellflat Street in Rochdale and he was working as a steeple jack/chimney repairer. [5]
He married Frances Dimmock in Rochdale in 1906 at St Peter's church in Newbold, Rochdale [6] [7]

Elsie was born later that year in Rochdale [8] but died in infancy in 1907.
They moved to Preston, where Frances was from, and in 1909 had a second daughter, Florence. They lived on Mill Bank, Preston at that time and Edgar was still working as a steeplejack. [9]
In the 1911 census, Frances, recorded as a widowed charwoman., was living with Florence on Poplar Street, Preston. [10]
It is possible that Edgar's death is the one recorded in Preston in the 1st Qtr of 1911 (although the age is a little out.) [11]
