Biography

William was born in North Carolina in about 1818.

In 1850, 32-year-old William D Askew was farming in Bertie County. His real estate was valued at $1400. Living with him was George Askew, age 15, who was a student. This is most likely the brother, George T Askew, mentioned in the will of William Askew.[1]

Based on the dates of his will, William passed away after September 20, 1855 and before February 1, 1856.[2]

Slaves

According to the 1850 Slave Schedule, William held 9 people between the ages of 1 and 29.[3]

  • Female 1 B
  • Male 29 B
  • Female 27 B
  • Male 20 B
  • Female 15 B
  • Male 13 B
  • Male 8 B
  • Male 2 B
  • Female 1 B

In his will, William bequeathed 4 people. It is assumed the 4 form part of the 9 people enslaved in 1850, but further research is required.
