Annie Askey was born in 1871 at Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, the daughter of Joseph Askey and Ellen Askey formerly Colclough. [1]
She was baptised on 15 February 1871 at St. Peter Ad Vincula, Stoke on Trent. Her parents were then living at St. Ann St, Stoke on Trent and father Joseph was a waggoner. Annie's date of birth was recorded in the baptismal register as 20 January 1871. [2]
In the 1871 census the family was recorded living at 5 St. Ann St. Father Joseph, aged 33, was a labourer. Mother Ellen was aged 30. Siblings were Therasa [sic] J aged 7, Mary J aged 4 and Thos. E aged 2. Annie was aged 2 months. Also living with them were four lodgers. [3]
In 1881 the family was living at St. Ann's St, house unnumbered. Father Joseph, aged 43, was a dray man. Mother Ellen was aged 40. Siblings were Teresa J, aged 17, a potter's paintress; Mary J, aged 17, a duster at the tile works; William aged 7, Joseph aged 5 and James aged 3. Annie was aged 10 years. Also living with them was a cousin [of Annie and her siblings] named Henry Tooth, aged 21, a dray man, and visitor Joseph Nesbitt, aged 22, a groom. [4]
Annie Askey married Samuel Cashmore on 22 November 1890 at St Peter's Church, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire. Their marriage certificate recorded Samuel was a bachelor aged 24 and an insurance agent. His father was named as Issac Cashmore, also an insurance agent. Annie was a spinster aged 21. Her father was named as Joseph Askey, a dray man. At the time of their marriage Samuel was living at 54 Elgin St and Annie at 83 Elgin St. Their witnesses were Isaac Cashmore and Treasa [sic] Jessie Thomas, Annie's married sister. [5]
In the 1891 census Samuel and Annie were residing at 54 Elgin St, Stoke on Trent. Samuel, aged 24, was an insurance agent. Annie was aged 21. [6]
This couple had three known sons named Frederick Horace Cashmore born 27 June 1891 at Stoke on Trent, Albert Edward Cashmore born 1894 at Burton on Trent, Staffordshire and Howard Stanley Cashmore born 24 April 1900 at 193 Bevington Rd, Aston Manor, Warwickshire [birth certificate of Howard].
Frederick was baptised on 2 August 1891 at St. Jude's Church, Hanley, Staffordshire. His parents were then still living at 54 Elgin St and Samuel was an AUT insurance superintendent. Frederick's date of birth was recorded in the baptismal register as above.
Albert Edward was baptised on 9 December 1894 at Christ Church, Burton on Trent. His parent's were then living at 57 Blackpool St and Samuel was an assurance superintendent. [7]
Howard was baptised on 11 May 1900 at St. Peter and St. Paul, Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire. His parents were then living at 193 Bevington Rd. Samuel’s occupation was shown as an insurance superintendent on both Howard's birth certificate and baptismal record. [8]
In the 1901 census the family was living at 19 Longford Place, South Manchester, Lancashire. Samuel, aged 34, was an assurance general superintendent. Annie was aged 32. Frederick was aged 9, Albert aged 6 and Howard aged 11 months. Also living with them was domestic servant Lily Vernon, aged 17. [9]
School records for Ipswich Municipal Secondary School for Boys recorded son Howard, born 24 April 1900, commenced school there on 14 September 1910 and left on 29 July 1914. He had previously attended Ducie Avenue Higher Elementary School in Manchester. His parent was named as Samuel Cashmore and their address as "Rusholme", Corder Rd [Ipswich, Suffolk]. [10]
In 1911 the family was living at Corder Rd, Ipswich, Suffolk. Samuel, aged 44, was still an assurance superintendent. Annie was aged 41. Frederick, aged 19, was an engineer apprentice. Albert, aged 16, was a provision merchant's apprentice. Howard was aged 10. [11]
Hebert [Bert] Gadd, Samuel's nephew, son of his sister Annie, was in England and France with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in WWI. In his war diary, listed with other addresses of friends and relatives, was Mr S Cashmore of 64 Christchurch Rd, Ipswich. [12]
In the 1921 census Samuel and Annie were living at The Oaks, Nacton near Ipswich. Samuel, aged 55, was an assurance divisional manager at Pearl Assurance Company Eastern Counties, of High Holborn, London. Annie was aged 51. Living with them was domestic servant Frances Alice Mary Digings, aged 18. [13]
Samuel Cashmore died in 1924 aged 57 years. [14]

The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Annie was residing at 2 Crofton Road, Ipswich. Born on 20 January 1871, she was aged 68 years. Still living with her was domestic servant Francis [sic] Digings. Born 15 April 1903, she was aged 36. Frances' surname was later amended to Clow, her married surname. [16]
Annie Cashmore died in 1961 aged 89 years. [17]
