Richard Askren was probably born in about 1759 in the Province of Maryland. He was the son of Thomas Askren and Martha New.[1]
His family had migrated from Maryland to Fayette County, Pennsylvania, by 1785, when his father Thomas received a 300 acre land grant in Fayette County.[2] Richard first appears as an adult living in Union township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, in 1786.[3]
Some researchers identify his wife as Martha (___).[citation needed]
He appears as the head of his household in Wharton township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, in 1790, living near his father Thomas and brother William.[4]
Richard and his family migrated west and settled in Adams County, Ohio, some time before 1806 when Richard first appears on the tax lists there.[5]
Richard appears as the head of his household in Liberty township, Adams County, Ohio, in 1820[6] and 1830.[7]
was born in 1755. Richard Askren ... He passed away in 1840. [8]
He died before 1840 in Adams County, and was buried in the Cherry Fork Cemetery, Adams County, Ohio.[citation needed]
Richard is the fourth son named in his father's will.[2] The 1830 census indicates he was born between 1751-1760.[7] His estimated birth date at the high end of that range is a rough estimate based on the assumption that his parents married in about 1752 and he was their fourth son (based on the order that Thomas' sons are listed in his will). Location in Maryland is based on the birth location for his sister Diana.[9]
