Biography

Charles was born in 1823. He is the son of Thomas Asquith and Sarah Briggs. He passed away in 1893. [1]

Charles Asquith, the brother of John Asquith, was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, England, May 16, 1823. Charles was a spinner and weaver by trade.

He was married in 1847 to Miss Mary Stead, of Bradford, Yorkshire, England. They had one living daughter, Mary Anna (Shaw) , of Waterloo, Iowa. Charles' wife, Mary Stead Asquith, died in 1851.

On 6 June 1841 Charles (age 15) was in Goose Hill, Bradford, Yorkshire & Yorkshire (West Riding).

He was married in 1855 to Mrs. Mary Sutcliffe, Bradford, Yorkshire, England. They had a son, Robert C. Asquith. Mary Sutcliffe was a widow with a thirteen year old daughter when she married Charles. This daughter was Rebecca Sutcliffe, our grandmother.

In 1856 they emigrated to Johnstown, Pennsylvania where Charles was engaged in the mining industry. In 1859 they moved to Ohio and back to Pennsylvania in 1861.

Charles Asquith enlisted in the 78th Penn. V. I. , Co. C, in the spring of 1863. He was in four severe engagements. He was mustered out in 1865.

In 1865 Charles Asquith and his brother John, and their families, moved near Hudson, Iowa, where each bought 120 acres of land.

Charles held offices of trustee of Orange Township for two years, of road supervisor for four years, and School Director for five years.

In 1876 Charles Asquith was ordained a minister in the German Baptist Brethren Church. He ws a pastor of the church on Section 22, with a membership of 80.

So Charles Asquith was married to our great grandmother.
