Research Notes

  • Possibly remarried in Amsterdam, Netherlands to Alida de Millij (daughter of Jan de Millij) see Notice of Marriage from 19 Dec 1710 where is listed as the widower of Johanna Victor (this signature appears to match that of Johannes Fredrick Starrenbergh on the VOC pay register)[4]
  • Possibly known as Jan Fredrick Starrenburgh as a person by that name has a child with Alida de Millij called Johannes Philippus baptised 25 Mar 1712 in Amsterdam, Netherlands and witnessed by Philippus de Millij and Catrina Reminck (widow of Jan de Millij)[5]
  • Possibly known as Johannes Fredrick Starrenbergh as person by that name is employed by the VOC and arrives in the Cape around 1695 and leaves around 1707. That name is on some muster rolls in 1696 and 1697. [6][7]
  • There are some "machtings" that are drawn up with a notary in 1715 with the names Johannes Starrenberg and Alida de Millij / Milly in Amsterdam, Netherlands[8][9]
  • In 1693 Johanna Victor with her first husband and 6 children are on the muster roll of free men in the Cape[10]
  • In 1696 only Johanna Victor is on the muster roll of free men in the Cape with 5 children (2 sons and 3 daughters)[11][12]
  • In 1696 Johannes Fredrick Starrenberg is on the muster roll of VOC military company men in the Cape as a midshipman (low rank)[13]
  • In 1697 Joannes Fredrik Starrenberg is on the muster roll of VOC military company men in the Cape as a midshipman (low rank)[14]
  • In muster roll dated Dec 1697 both he and his wife Johanna Victor are on the muster roll of free men in the Cape with Johanna's 5 children (2 sons and 3 daughters)[15]
  • In muster roll dated Dec 1698 both he and his wife Johanna Victor are on the muster roll of free men in the Cape with Johanna's 5 children (2 sons and 3 daughters)[16]
  • In 1700 both he and his wife Johanna Victor are on the muster roll of free men in the Cape with Johanna's 5 children (2 sons and 3 daughters)[17][18]
  • In 1701 both he and his wife Johanna Victor are on the muster roll of free men in the Cape with Johanna's 5 children (2 sons and 3 daughters)[19][20]
  • In 1702 both he and his wife Johanna Victor are on the muster roll of free men in the Cape with Johanna's 3 children (1 son and 2 daughters)[21][22]
  • In 1704 Joannes Starrenbergh (of Amsterdam) is on the muster roll of VOC military company men in the Cape as an "adsistent"[23]
  • In 1705 Johannes Starrenburg (of Amsterdam) is on the muster roll of VOC military company men in the Cape as an "adsisstent"[24]
  • In 1707 both he and his wife Johanna Victor are on the muster roll of free men in the Cape[25]
  • In 1708 his wife Johanna Victor is on the muster roll of free men in the Cape but he isn't[26]
  • There is also in this same period a landrost (magistrate) with the same name Johannes Sterrenberg who may or may not be the same person. I have not compared all the dates to check if there is any conflict.[27][28]

I think this is a swearing in /affadavit / appointment of Johannes Starrenburg as landrost (magistrate) at the age of 29 - perhaps someone with a better knowledge of Dutch could confirm this

Can we change the last name to Sterrenberg or something similar as the translation his LNAB was based on has been corrected on the source website. Also all documents I have come across so far use some form of Sterrenberg.

Would it be possible to find a primary source for the very first spelling of this LNAB? Perhaps under Starrenburgh or a similar variant?
posted by Philip van der Walt
I have looked for a while with all phonetic variants but not come across anything yet. I have added further research notes in the meantime in case it helps someone else locate the record.

Take a look at this record and see what you think (this is the only baptism of a Johannes Fredrick that matches the time period)

Baptism record of Johannes Fredericus -> https://www.openarch.nl/saa:0288894c-0b3f-412f-b639-a17c5d17d5fc (See also profile on FamilySearch for parents and siblings linked together - https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/GZHL-CM4). It is possible the surname of the person in the record is not Sterrenberg and that is just the city his father is from.

I'm not sure if he would have been old enough to join the VOC in 1694, also he would have made for a very young husband to marry Johanna Victor but still possible none the less.

Ok, I did some reading and for the British Navy it was a normal age. See: However, most midshipmen aspired to take the lieutenant examination at age 17 or 18, and the typical age of a midshipman was between 15 and 22.

So maybe that was a normal age for a midshipman, but it would he still be very young (18) when he marries Johanna Victors (at the age of 40) but a very similar age for his second wife. It could still work but I don't have any other evidence to support it as I haven't seen his parent's names mentioned anywhere.
