Biography
Maj.-Gen. Ralph Assheton (or Ashton) was the 2nd but 1st surviving son of Richard Assheton (c.1578-1618) and his wife Mary, daughter of Thomas Venables of Kinderton (Cheshire),[1] born 31 March and baptised 6 April 1606.
He refused a Knighthood in 1631, and was MP for Lancashire 1640-48. A strong Presbyterian and Commander-in-Chief of the Parliamentarian army in Lancashire.
He m. on 4 May 1623 at Woodsome (Yorks WR), Elizabeth (c.1608-62), daughter of John Kaye esq. of Woodsome
Children:
Richard Assheton (c.1625-30), born about 1625; died in the lifetime of his father, 25 March 1630, supposedly as the result of witchcraft, for which one Utley was hanged at Lancaster; buried at Middleton, 27 March 1630;
Sir Ralph Assheton (1626-65), kt. and 1st bt. (q.v.);
John Assheton (d. 1678) of Burne (Yorks) and Middleton; married, 1 September 1663 at Penwortham (Lancs), Elizabeth, daughter of John Fleetwood of Penwortham 2 da.
Elizabeth Assheton (b. 1628), born 16 March 1627/8; married, 1651, Adam Beaumont (d. by 1668), son of Sir Thomas Beaumont of Whitley Beaumont (Yorks WR) 1s. 2da.
Mary Assheton (1636-80), born 7 December and baptised 15 December 1636; married Christopher Banaster (b. aft. 1636 - 90) of Bank Hall, Bretherton (Lancs) 2 da. Christopher Banaster was a younger son of Henry Banaster of the Bank (d. abt. 1640) & Elizabeth Farington.[2]
Anne Assheton; died unmarried.
