Mary Assheton (Asheton / Ashton) was born between 1526 and 1535 in Middleton, Lancashire, England to father Richard Assheton and most likely her mother was Anne Strickland. (citations noted below)
Mary married (1) _ Gouland of Offerton, co Derby, esq, and (2) on July 18, 1547 at Middleton, John Southworth.[1]
She married a second time to Sir John Southworth (High Sheriff, the son of Sir John and Lady Margery Le Boteler Southworth) on July 23, 1547 in Middleton (by Oldham), Lancashire, England.[2]
John and Mary had children:
Thomas Southworth, b. abt 1548; d. 30 Nov 1616.[3] son and heir apparent, married to Rosamonde, the daughter of William Lyster, late of Thornton, co York, esq.[4] Thomas had the following children living in 1595;
Christopher Southworth, a student at Douay in 1579, a priest at Rome in 1584,[1] in 1595 was a prisoner in the castell at Wysbiche,[4] and living in 1612;[1]
Gilbert Southworth, a lawyer, living in 1595 and 1622,[1] not mentioned in his father's will;
It should be noted that there are no primary sources for sub-reference of TCS nor for Whitaker
The Baronetcies of Assheton, of Great Lever and Whalley and of Middleton were spelled Assheton, but many sources, such as these Southworth family histories, thepeerage.com, or Weis spell the surname Ashton or Asheton. The name is a toponymic surname from Ashton-under-Lyne in Lancastershire, since that's where her ancestor Sir Ralph de Assheton lived prior to buying the Middleton manor. I assume Assheton is the archaic 'spelling'.
I've set her father as Sir Richard Assheton - he's the only knighted Richard Assheton in this time period and was the Lord of Middleton where they were married and many younger sons of the Middleton branch were rectors of the church.[5][6]
Further evidence is in Nick Kingsley's research: "Mary Assheton (d. 1595); married 1st, [forename unknown] Gouland (d. by 1547) of Offerton and 2nd, 18 July 1547, Sir John Southworth, kt. (1526-95) of Samlesbury Hall (Lancs) by whom she had issue six sons and five daughters; died 3 November 1595 at Samlesbury Hall." [6]
However, at Samelsbury Hall their arms have Hoghton quartering Assheton, which is not supported by Nick Kingsley's research. I'll keep looking.[7]
Also just noticed her death was 9 Nov 1602 Runcorn, Cheshire...trying to track that down.
