OBITUARY [1]
MR JOHN WILLIAM ASTLE Early this morning the death occurred of John William Astle, of Washington road, Nelson, who was born in Nelson in 1856, and had lived here all his life. He was the only son of the late Mr Thomas Astle, who married Charlotte Spain, both of whom were among the founders of the Nelson Settlement, the latter being the daughter of William Spain, celebrated for having carried, singlehanded, to the top of Britannia Heights the cannon which until forty-five years ago used to be fired at noon every Saturday, to enable the people of Nelson to adjust their clocks. The late Mr Astle who was well-known in Nelson as a cab proprietor, had a very retentive memory, and was able to relate incidents in the history of his native town, which had occurred during the last threequarters of a century. Many were the tales he could tell of interesting Nelson characters who have long since passed away. The deceased Nelsonian leaves a widow and many friends to mourn their loss.
