William was recorded in the census (Head of House; Occupation: Labourer) on 2nd April 1871, aged 31 years, at 9 Court, 2 House, 23 Barr Street, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.

William married twice. He was married to Ann Elizabeth Stride [Cox] and Ann Astle [Harris].

William was aged 66 years and was a tobacconist. Julia was 64 years. Living with them was their daughter, Mary A. Astle, aged 24 years, who was also a tobacconist. Mary A. was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. Sharing this accommodation was their granddaughter, Alice Astle, aged 5 years, who was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England. William Astle, their widowed son, aged 44 years, was still residing in Bart Street, Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. He was a toolmaker. Living with him was his son William, aged 18 years, a tube drawer, and a boarder, called Robert Benton, a fender fitter, aged 22 years, who hailed from Sheffield in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England. Also at this address on Census Night was Mary Ann Astle, his sister-in-law, also from Birmingham. She was 28 years old and a dressmaker.
