George was born in 1857. He was the son of Sir Delaval Astley, 18th Lord Hastings and Hon. Frances Manners-Sutton.

He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England and at Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.
Upon the death of his brother Bernard on 22 December 1875 he succeeded as the 20th Lord Hastings [E., 1295], and succeeded as the 10th Baronet Astley, of Hill Morton, co. Warwick [E., 1660].
He gained the rank of Major in the 2nd Brigade, East Division, Royal Artillery.
He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Norfolk.
He married Hon. Elizabeth Evelyn Harbord (daughter of Charles Harbord, 5th Baron Suffield and Cecilia Annetta Baring) on 17 April 1880.
They had six children;
George passed away in 1904 at the age of 47.[2]
