Ben, drowned in the Mississippi River. He had gone with his brother-in-law,
James Haigh (Effie's 1st husband), to Cassville, WI. They drove a sleigh across the river ice. The rig started to sink, and James begged Ben not to try to save it, but been got out and broke through the ice.
