From entry for Monday, February 16th
"At Atchison, Kansas all P.M. Helen, Hughie and I drove to Atchison, Kansas- It is only 22 miles away - The city was much better looking than I imagined it. Well built, prosperous looking, fine schools, public buildings and a great Catholic college St. Benedict's- My what a plant. One building cost a million. The campus overlooks the Missouri River. We had lunch at the Hotel Atchison. Coffee shop, very good. Then we inquired about the cemetery and were directed to Mt. Vernon Cemetery - south of main part of city on high hill. We drove in and I saw the sexton preparing a grave, and he directed us to John E. Atchison's grave, a handsome monument, a gift of Order of Woodmen of the World. John was born 1856 and died 1907 (51 yrs old)- On the same lot is a smaller stone and graves of four children - all very young, oldest 10, youngest about 1 yr.: Willie - Myrtle - Cecil - Blanche. It was a great satisfaction to me to have seen John's last resting-place. We were gone from home about 3 hours."
