From the Evening News of Saturday 24 February 1900 we see:

ONE OF THE N.S.W. INFANTRY KILLED AT ARUNDEL.
Private Samuel Charles Atchison was, as far as we have, information, the first of Captain Legge's little company of infantry, which sailed in the Aberdeen on November 3, to give his life for the Empire. Private Atchison was a member of the 5th Regiment (Scots' Rifles), and he only joined that well-known corps in May last. He was a smart, efficient, and popular soldier, and was one of the first from his regiment to volunteer for the front He was 24 years of age, about 5ft 10in in height, and altogether an athletic young man. He was an orchardist and fruitgrower, and he lived at East Carlingford, about twelve miles up the Great Northern Railway. His next of kin is his mother, who resides at Shellharbor, and with whom, it is needless to say, the sympathy of her son's regiment, from the colonel down to the youngest bugler, and of the entire colony will be in this affliction.

from The Kiama Independent, and Shoalhaven Advertiser newspaper of Saturday 2 June 1900 we see:

Unveiling of the Atcheson Memorial.
SHELLHARBOR SCHOOL OF ARTS PICNIC AND SPORTS.
THE above events, which were to have taken place on Queen's Birthday-but which were postponed owing to the exces-sively wet weather-transpired on Wednesday last, The postponement could not have militated against the success of the proceedings, for there were fully 400 persons present; the weather was beautiful, the committee's superintendence of matters was hitchlessly well-managed, the result being that the crowd of folk, young and old, entered into the proceedings of the day with great animation and delight. One had the opportunity of observing many outward signs of human feeling on Wedneday; There was gladness everywhere while festivities held the away; but-what sadness when poor Samuel Atcheson's monument wan unveiled ; Most eyes were wet; but every heart ached in sympathy with a widowed mother and other members of the Atcheson family, who were present. There are, however (though not at all times easy to elucidate), reasons to temper sorrow with gladness in a ceremony such as that performed in honor of private Samuel Atcheson ; and when Mr. Archibald Campbell, M P., had concluded his remarks on Wednesday afternoon, the flags which enveloped the memorial being unfurled. manifestations of joyfulness were general and continued. The monument is a high one, of marble, and stands on a knoll in the Recreation Reserve, near the boat store; it bears the following inscrip-tion :
"This monument was erected by public subscription in memory of Samuel Charles Atchison, who was killed at Reneburg, South Africa, on 22nd February, 1900, while on active service in the British-Boer war," ....
