Col. Thomas Atchley served with 1st New Jersey Regiment, Continental Army during the American Revolution.
Thomas Atchely served one month in the Colonial Army in the fall of 1775 as a private in Major John Dunn's First Regiment, Middlesex County Militia, New Jersey. He served six months as a private from Loudoun County, Virginia in Captain Reddakin's Virginia Company in 1777. In 1781 he served a month from Botetourt County, Virginia as a private in John Lewis' Virginia Company of Boretourt County Regiment. Later in the same year he enlisted for two more weeks.
One of the founders of the Alder Branch Baptist Church organized in his dwelling house in 1830."

Sevier County Public Library history center has a document on the Alder Branch Baptist Church which recognizes him as one of the founding fathers of that church.
