Source: #S58 Page: Letter from Nicolas Harris, dated May 15, 1896 Data: Text: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~aten/nhletters/nh-1896-2a.htm NOTENicholas Harris (etc.) Belvidere, N.J. May 15th 1896 CONT CONT Mr. Henry J. Aten, Hiawatha Kansas. CONT CONT Dear Brother and Kinsman, CONT CONT Your kind letter of the 6 inst. was duly received and read with pleasure. Also the other inclosure was read with great pleasure and I thank you for the information you so kindly gave about your family history. CONT CONT I have already shown the letter and family history to two or three of the friends, and will show the same to all the others that I see from time to time, I have not seen Mrs. Hay since I received your letter, but will take it to her house in a few days and let her read it. I am going to make copies and send them to Mrs. Caroline A Prentiss and her sisters. She has written that she intends coming out here this summer and when she comes we will look into the matter and if there is any more information that we can give you, we will gladly do so. When I go up to Newton in Sussex County I will see what further history I can find, also when I am down to Easton the County seat of Northampton County Penna., and to Morristown, County seat of Morris County N.J. I will see what if anything can be found that will be of benefit to you. Along with this I send you my picture in return for the pictures you so kindly sent to me. It is from a negative taken in Nov. 1894. I sent and had a few copies made from it. CONT CONT As I said, after I see several of the friends we will see what more history and information we can get for you, and then will send it to you. CONT CONT You spoke about “Auten’s” at Princeville Illinois. Out here we knew that there were and still are Aten’s there but we do notat present know about the “Auten’s” unless they are the same relatives, but spell their names that way. I send you herewith a short history of the “Aten’s” out there. This is sent to you at the request of Mr. Henry Aten of Hope who has read your letters sent to me. CONT CONT We would all be pleased to have you stop off and see some of us whenever you can. We all send love and kind regards to you and Mrs. A. and the daughters. I will be pleased to hear from you again. CONT CONT In conclusion I am very fraternally and sincerely, your humble servant. CONT CONT Nicholas Harris CONT CONT There lives at Hope 9 miles above Belvidere (The place was before 1800 an old Moravian town called Greenland) a Mr. Henry Aten who has brothers and sisters living far and near. He is the son of a Henry Aten, and whose grand father was also named Henry Aten which said Henry Aten the grand father, is burried down along the river Delaware, at Ramsaysburg in (near) Warren County on the opposite side of the river from the old Aten grave yard that I wrote you about, where in the yard over in N.Jersey many of the old original settlers and their families are burried. CONT CONT Mr. Thomas Aten of Mount Hermon in Hope township, who was a son of the eldest Henry above mentioned and a brother of Henry No. 2 and an uncle of Henry now living at Hope, was married to Charity Henry of Sussex County and died in 1877, aged 89 years, leaving several children, sons and daughters, and left a will appointing his nephew Henry of Hope his Executor (which will is recorded here in Belvidere). CONT CONT The next time I go to Trenton I will look up some old papers and records there, and see what there may be that will interest you. CONT CONT I also found out today that Derrick Aten Jr., as he was called-son of John Aten-grandson of Derrick who was your great great grandfather-had three sons in the late war as follows--- CONT CONT Derrick Aten and William Aten both served in Co. F. 129 Penna., Vol. Infty.-9 months and were both honorably discharged & both came home and married and are both dead now.---Derrick leaving a widow and three children, whom I know-and William leaving a widow and two children, daughters whom I know.--- CONT CONT Also Peter Aten a brother to the above two persons-served in Co. G, 153 Regt Penna., Vols. Infty. 9 months and was honorably discharged and lives now, in Scranton Penna., said to be married I do not know him personally. CONT CONT The following are the sons and daughters of said Thomas Aten. CONT CONT · Charles S. Aten, of Princeville Illinois-was living in 1895 his release & receipt duly acknowledged before a Notary Public of Peoria County named Edward “Auten” is in the hands of Henry at Hope-executed in 1878- CONT CONT · Herbert Henry Aten, son of Thomas married Judah Litts of Sussex Co., N.J. who lived a year or two ago in Saline County Kansas, his release duly executed in 1878 in Saline County Kansas is in the hands of Henry at Hope. CONT CONT · Aaron Aten, son of Thomas, lived at the time of executing his receipt and receiving his share at Tecumseh Michigan. His receipt is also in the hands of Henry of Hope. He has been heard from within 4 or 5 years--He was spoken of as a local preacher or minister of the Christian Church. Can he be the Adrian you speak of? CONT CONT · Hannah Aten daughter married to _____ Dimmick who at the time of receiving her share and executing a release was living near Peoria Ill., as her release & receipt was duly executed before a Notary Public in Peoria County Illinois. Henry at Hope has her receipt given in 1878. She has not been heard from directly for 5 or 6 years. CONT CONT · (Margaret Aten also died young) CONT CONT · Elizabeth married Lewis Beam and died childless in N.J. not long after her marriage CONT CONT · Thomas Aten above had a son John who married a Miss Nelson and removed to Illinois and died in Peoria County in 1878, just before his father’s estate was divided leaving several children, viz. CONT CONT Vincent Aten of Princeville Ill. CONT CONT Kittie M. (Aten) Gervin of Princeville Ill. CONT CONT Phileta Aten “ “ CONT CONT Matilda Aten “ “ CONT CONT Margaret Aten “ “ CONT CONT & John Aten “ “ CONT CONT The release of the above heirs at law of John Aten signed by all six is in the hands of Henry of Hope and was executed before a Notary Public in Peoria County Illinois in 1878. CONT CONT All the above children of Thomas Aten Decd. Are cousins of Henry of Hope and he tells me he has letters from some of them occasionally. CONT CONT [In the margin is written: “P.S. All the receipts & releases therein spoken of are recorded in our probate office here in Belvidere & I saw them yesterday with Mr. Henry Aten, so there cannot be any mistake about them.”] CONT CONT The said Henry Aten of Hope has a sister named Caroline who married Benjamin Treadwell and they now live at Amboy,---- Lee County, Illinois-Henry tells me he had a letter from her only a few days ago. CONT CONT Mr. Henry Aten of Hope was at my office yesterday to see me on business, and after getting through with the business, I showed him your letters 1st & 2nd & and the Aten history sent by you, and he then gave me part of the above information. CONT CONT Henry also has a brother named Herbert Aten living out in Susquehanna County Penna.---also Mr. Henry Aten of Hope says he has other relatives living in different parts of the west, and thinks that the Aten who started the town of “Aten” in Nebraska is his kinsman. Also he is nearly certain that the Rev. T.G. Aten of Iowa is his kinsman if the name is Thomas Green Aten, then it is certain because he had a second cousin by that name. CONT CONT Mr. Henry Aten of Hope says his Uncle Thomas always said they were related to Peter Aten who was Mrs. Josephine Hay’s grand father. Henry’s father died when he Henry was a small boy and he got his information from his other relatives. CONT CONT Mrs. Hay has often told me that we were all distantly related to old Uncle “Tommy Aten” as he, Mr. Thomas Aten was always called-she says she remembers very well that many of these Aten’s came to see Uncle Peter as they called her grandfather, and she says that her grand father Peter (brother of your great grandfather Aaron or Adrian) often went to see different ones of them. CONT CONT Henry of Hope says he has always heard all his friends and uncles say that they were related to the Aten’s down along the river, meaning those who lived at and near Aten’s ferry who were related to you & to me & Mrs. Hay & Mrs. Prentiss.----- CONT CONT There is a person named John J. Aten who lives up at Warrington in Warren County.. He claims to be a distant relative to the Aten’s of Hope and says his father’s name was John and that they are all descended from a John Aten or Auten who lived in Sussex Co. and served in the Revolutionary War---The Aten’s of Hope claim the same lineage and say that their ancestor served in the Revolution. CONT CONT The John of Warrington is most always called “Aûter” as many people in old times spoke the name-I remember that when a small boy, it was said Uncle Peter “Aûter” and Aunt Polly “Aûter,” and the name was most generally spoken “Aûter.” CONT CONT Another thing do you observe in all the families how the names Thomas and Henry and John are kept up and continued.-----Last summer when Mrs. Prentiss was out here she (as she usually does) went up to see Henry of Hope, and she speaks of him as Cousin Henry of Hope, but that does not prove all. I rely on the fact, that the older members of the families like Mrs. Hay’s grandfather, and Mr. Thomas Aten, above spoken of, saying they were relatives, is better proof to me as they were closer related and knew about the family history more than we can now-a-days. CONT CONT There is a John Aten who lives at Manasquan in Monmouth County N.J. I do not know him and have never seen him. There are Aten’s in Trenton New Jersey-I have seen some of them; they are the children of Elisha Aten dec’d-Elisha was a brother of Robert Aten who now lives near Hicksville Ohio.---- CONT CONT Did I tell you in a previous letter that Robert of Ohio, Elisha of Trenton & John who recently died over in Penna., are grandsons of Henry Aten who was a brother of your great great grandfather Derrick---Dierich or Richard? CONT CONT We are all well at this time at my home-also Mrs. Hay is usually well and all the others who are of akin to you are usually well so far as I know. I hope that you and your loved ones at your home are well. CONT CONT What do the people of the west think of Wm. Jennings Bryan and the Democratic Platform? This paper need not be returned as I have my rough copy of the old deed. It is now past 12 o’clock midnight and I must close. CONT CONT I will be pleased to hear from you at any time. CONT CONT With kind wishes I am your cousin Nicholas Harris CONT
