Adrian Robert Aten was born in 1835 to Peter and Margaret (Quinn) Aten in Eaton, Ohio. Adrian would relocate to Stark County, Illinois, where he married Sarah Jane Prattz on the 4th of July in 1854. Together they would have at least three children as follows:
Susan M. (Aten) Collins (1855 - 1931)
Marion Eugene Aten (1857 - 1923)
Sarah A. (Aten) Morris (1859 - 1946)
When the Civil War broke out Adrian volunteered to fight with the 77th Regiment of the Illinois Volunteers. He would serve in the following engagements: Battle of Port Gibson, Siege of Vicksburg, Battle of Champion Hill and the Red River Campaign attaining the rank of Corporal.
