Thomas Aten was born in 1670 at Flatbush, Kings County, New York. He was the son of Adriaen Hendrickse Aten and Elizabeth Thomas. Thomas Aten took oath of allegiance in 1687 at Flatbush, New York. He took the Oath of Allegience to the King of England in September 1687 at Kings County, New York. He lived in 1694; "native of Flatbush." He married Elsje Skillman, daughter of Captain Thomas Skillman and Sara Pettit, in 1694 at Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. Thomas Aten was (an unknown value) before 1701 at New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey. He and Elsje Skillman removed to the "Valley of the Raritan" between 1710 and 1715 at Somerset County, New York.

Thomas Aten was "In the list of Families of the First Ref. Ch. (N. Brunswick) from 1732 to 1735," says Rev. P. T. Pockman, pastor 1898, between 1732 and 1735.

He died in on 10 December 1757 at age 87 years.[2][3]

The 1906 article series "The Skillmans of America and Their Kin" shows only 3 children for Thomas Aten and Elsje Skillman: Adriaen, 1695; Jan, 1701; and Jannetje, 1704. This is likely to be incomplete. It stands to reason that there were more children between these dates and that they would have named a son Thomas for Elsje's father.
