Biography

Name

Dr.(HC) Drs. H. Mohammad Hatta was born with the name Mohammad Athar. He is popularly known as Bung Hatta. (Brother Hatta) [1]

His name, Athar, comes from the Arab, and means fragrant. "By the Minangkabau people, the word Athar is often pronounced Atta, and slowly changed to become Hatta." [2]

In reality, Bung Hatta has no last name. The name Athar, which became Atta then Hatta, is a personal name rather than a surname. The closest the Minangkabau come to a last name is their village of origin, sometimes used as a kind of surname. Bung Hatta did not use his, but his grandfather did.

Birth and Parentage

He was born in Fort De Kock (now known as Bukittinggi in West Sumatra, Dutch East Indies) on 12th August 1902 and died in Jakarta on the 14th March 1980 at the age of 77 years.

He was the second son to the couple, the first being Rafiah, who was born in 1900. From a young age, he was educated and brought up in a family circle that was obedient to the teachings of Islam.

His father's father Abdurahman Batuhampar was known as a Muslim scholar who founded the Suau Batuhampar (a religious school). His mother was from a trading family.

His father died when he was eight[3] months old. His mother then married Agus Haji Ning, a trader from Palembang. Haji Ning had a trading connection with Ilyas Bagindo Marah, Hatta's mother's father. The second marriage of his mother produced four daughters.

Career

He was a warrior, statesman, economist, and also the first Vice President of Indonesia.

Together with Sukarno, he played an important role in gaining independence from Dutch colonialism and in proclaiming it on 17th August 1945. He was Prime Minister in the Hatta I, Hatta II and in the constitution.

He stepped down from the position of Vice President in 1956 because he had difficulties with Sukarno. Hatta is also known as Bapak Koperasi Indonesia. (The Father of the Corporation of Indonesia).

The main airport in Jakarta is called Sukarno-Hatta Airport using both names of the two first senior politicians of Indonesia out of respect for their services.

Since his wife passed at least 25 years ago, why is her profile still not visible? Can we update it so that we can also attempt to improve upon her family tree as well? Thanks.

Also trying to determine if his adopted son, Desi Alwi, has a profile. From the private profiles and dates attached, it does not appear so, but just confirming before making one for him.

And also trying to determine if one of the private children happens to be Meutia Hatta Swasono, who is also Notable and eligible for a visible profile. I'm hoping not to make a duplicate, but since all the profiles are private, it's very difficult to know.
