Biography

Jane was born in 1831. In the 1861 census Mrs Jane Flood is listed as a 'servant' to a James Atherton and his wife Mary, along with her 6 year old daughter Elizabeth. James Atherton was a publican and very possibly a brother of Jane's (there is a James Atherton born to Edward and Elizabeth in June 1825, which fits). Presumably as a widow, she was forced to rely on the 'charity' of her family and this was the best provision she was offered. I can find no trace of Mrs Flood on the census after this date, so she might have remarried and be under another name after that.
