Ellen was born in about 1832 in Eccleston. She was the daughter of Joseph and Margaret Atherton.
By June 6th 1841, the family were living in Thatto Heath, Eccleston. Ellen's father was a coal miner. Her eldest sister, Mary, was in the household with her daughter Ellen. Samuel Hardman, a bricklayer, was also in the household; he married Mary a month later.
By March 30th 1851, the family were still in Eccleston; Ellen's father was employed as a labourer, and Ellen was working as a house maid. Her married sister Catherine was also in the household, along with her husband and daughter.
